5. US Events during Imperialism

  • In 1898, the Treaty of Paris was signed to end the Spanish-American war which gave the Philippine's to the U.S. The Philippine revolutionaries did not recognize this treaty and would fight the U.S. for their independence. They would declare war against the United States in 1899. An end to the war would be declared in 1902 but fighting would go on till 1913. The US would eventually give them independence after WWII after the US would have to fight Japan for them back in 1946. This was imperialism at it's finest. The US was fighting for and gained the Philippines just like all the other European countries.

  • Another country that was given to the US from the Treaty of Paris by Spain after a payment of $20 million as compensation was, Cuba. But Spain didn't hand over Cuba completely because the did not ceded it to the US. So that made the US a protectorate of Cuba. Like the other three countries, Cuba was under US military control. Eventually in 1902, Cuba gained it's own independence. Again it was imperialism because the US was grabbing up the land like all of Europe at the time.
